Beyond the Surface: The Art of X-rays Exhibit Provides New Perspectives on Everyday Objects
CHICAGO — This summer, Griffin Museum of Science and Industry will debut Beyond the Surface: The Art of X-rays, a new exhibit blending art and science to reveal the unexpected beauty and complexity of everyday objects. The multimedia experience will highlight the work of photographer Andrei Duman, using the state-of-the-art immersive technologies in Griffin Studio.
Beyond the Surface: The Art of X-rays will uncover the science and history of X-rays, which dates back to the late 19th century. Guests will test their knowledge through an interactive game to see if they can identify well-known toys and tools from their X-ray image. The exhibit will also explore high-end cars from the inside out through interactive displays of six scaled Bugatti models. Plus, X-ray imaging uncovers the interiors of several artifacts from the Museum’s historic collection including:
- Edison Patent Trial Bulbs (1893)
- Souvenir photographic box camera from the Century of Progress World’s Fair (1933)
- PARO Therapeutic Robot (2014)
These displays will be presented in Griffin Studio, an immersive digital space that combines ultra-high resolution, immersive projections with cinematic visualizations and interactivity to engage guests in a multi-sensory, communal experience around science with rotating exhibits. Griffin Studio opened in May 2024 with Notes to Neurons as its premiere exhibition.
