Wirelessly Monitoring Tumors
The IntelliTuM Tumor Sensor
Biomedical engineers in Germany have developed a way to monitor the growth of tumors without invasive surgery or biopsies. By implanting a tiny electronic sensor chip near a tumor, doctors can measure the amount of dissolved oxygen in tissue surrounding the tumor. This drop in oxygen levels can indicate aggressive or faster tumor growth. The sensor chip wirelessly transmits this data to a receiver carried by the patient, which sends the findings to the patient’s doctor—who can respond to a change in the tumor more quickly.
