Nikola Tesla (1856-1943)
Nikola Tesla was a mechanical and electrical engineer who changed the world with his innovations and ideas. His alternating-current (AC) motor ushered in what is called the "Second Industrial Revolution." Tesla also explored magnetism and wireless transmission of energy; his “teleautomaton” boat was the first remote-control device ever built.
A turning point in the adoption of AC power was the 1893 Columbian Exposition, for which the Museum of Science and Industry's building was constructed. The fair's celebrated "White City" was lit with AC power generated by Tesla and the Westinghouse Corporation. The brilliance and beauty of this display helped convince millions of fairgoers that this new source of power would, as it soon did, become the standard of electric power.
Now, over a century later, Science Storms presents a new Tesla coil and historic artifacts related to Tesla's work: legacies of a technological revolution that began just outside the Museum's doors!
