Lightning: Hipp Chronoscope (c. 1890)
Robert Millikan and Harvey Fletcher used a mechanical instrument similar to this one as a stopwatch for their oil-drop experiments. Prior to digital clocks, this chronoscope was one of the most accurate timing devices. In its day, it could measure time to an accuracy of 1/1000th of a second.
