Watch as the fairy dream home gets a facelift!
See Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle and its remarkable miniatures like never before, during a conservation project open to the public through mid-February 2014.
This elaborate house full of hand-crafted miniatures and artifacts was completed by silent film star Colleen Moore in 1935, and came to live at MSI in 1949. The Fairy Castle has delighted generations with its tiny treasures and imaginative presentation, representing the contributions of celebrities, artisans and craftspeople around the world. Its attention to detail even included actual electrical and plumbing systems, which after nearly eight decades are doing harm to the structure and are need of upgrading.
The conservation project will focus on repairing this damage and ensuring the structure's long-term preservation. The Fairy Castle's 200 individual segments will be disassembled, allowing its rooms to be seen in detail from all sides. More than 1,500 of the castle's tiny artifacts will also be displayed for up-close viewing in the conservation gallery. The conservators will be working in the gallery (see schedule below) and available to discuss the critical work of restoring these treasures.
Even if you've been a regular guest at the Fairy Castle, take this rare opportunity to see it up close and in detail—and see the delicate art of museum conservation in action.
