"In sickness and in health… till death do us part."
These words are certainly familiar as part of a traditional wedding vow. Little did you know it at the time, but on the day you were born, you and your body forged a similar bond. No matter what happens, your body is the one you get. Changes will take place within it, both expected and unexpected. Your body may present challenges for you, and you will probably return the favor. Science permitting, you may even be able to swap out a part or two. But your body is yours for the rest of your life. So what's in store for the two of you?
The natural results of aging
BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life brings its unique perspective to a presentation of aging and the life cycle as it plays out in the human body. The body is shown in all of its complexity and resilience through the stages of life, from prenatal development through advanced age.
Results of aging that can be controlled
While many changes in our health over time are natural, there are certainly things we can do (or not do) to make the most of our health. Specimens in the exhibit clearly depict the impact on the body from lifestyle choices. Says BODY WORLDS creator Dr. Gunther von Hagens, "The Cycle of Life will remind people of what's at stake as they age, and help them learn about living a long, healthy life."
Yet aging is not seen as a decline in this exhibit, says exhibit curator and creative designer Dr. Angelina Whalley. "One grows into one’s essential, elemental self in later years. You may not look as you once did, grasp new things so quickly or run as fast, but it is more than compensated for by experience and inner strength."
