Explore healthier living from an African-American perspective in this year’s Black Creativity exhibition, Taking Charge of YOU!
Learn how to protect and nourish the body with exercise and fresh, healthy food choices. As you consider changes you’d like to make in the new year, see the grim statistics about health challenges faced by many African Americans, including asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and stress. Taking Charge of YOU! features lectures, panel discussions and workshops—for all age groups—that emphasize healthy living.
In conjunction with the Museum’s newest permanent exhibit, YOU! The Experience—a comprehensive exhibit on human health and the connection between mind, body and spirit in the 21st century—Taking Charge of YOU! is a great opportunity to reflect on the positive changes you’d like to make in the new year.
The exhibit also celebrates the achievements of past and present African-American pioneers of medicine, like Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, who performed the first open-heart surgery, and Dr. Carla Pugh at Northwestern University, who is developing innovative technology for medical and surgical education. Discover the variety of career opportunities in the medical industry, and learn about the rich tradition of historically black colleges and universities in preparing African Americans for health care professions.
Additionally, a juried art exhibition of African-American artwork is held in conjunction with the feature exhibit each year, and the Black Creativity gala, to be held at the Museum on Jan. 30, 2010, will help raise money for the programming.
The Black Creativity program runs from January 14 through February 28, 2010 and is included with Museum general admission. General admission will be free on weekdays from Jan. 4-29, 2010 as well as Feb. 8 and Feb. 14, 2010.
