Elephant Automaton Clock
Germany, c. 1630
Atwood Collection 358

This exquisite clock has several interesting features. The clock is driven by the elephant’s tail, which acts as a pendulum. The elephant’s eyes also move in sync with the swinging motion of the tail. The figures on top of the turret rotate at the striking of the quarter hours, while the animals in the turret base rotate as the hours are struck.
