Eli Terry’s ability to produce quality wooden movements made the mass production of clocks possible. Wooden movements could be machine-stamped quickly and reliably, whereas brass movements needed a more careful manufacture with finishing touches added by artisans. The extra attention required by brass movements added both time and cost to their production.
