Replica No. 2 of John Harrison’s H1 Marine Timekeeper (1735)
Leonard A. Salzer
England, 1984
Atwood Collection 2368

Mr. Salzer took two and a half years to build this replica of John Harrison’s famous H1 timekeeper. He worked closely with the staff at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, England, where H1 is running on display. No working drawings or construction details were available, so the model was produced by observations and measurements taken from the artifact itself. The original H1 gained its place in history when it became the first device to solve the problem of finding longitude at sea in 1735.
