Astronomical and World Time Clock
Christian Gebhard
Germany, 1895
Atwood Collection D1039
This incredible piece is 10 ft. high by 10 ft. wide and weighs nearly 6,000 pounds. Christian Gebhard, an astronomy and mathematics professor, took thirty years to build this timepiece. This piece contains a multitude of features, including automata that perform throughout the day, a calendar that accounts for leap years and phases of the moon, a barometer, a dial that indicates the relative movement of six planets and also shows the signs of the zodiac, a celestial globe which turns according to sidereal time and indicates star positions, and an Earth globe indicating exact time across the world. This clock follows four different time systems: mean time, solar time, sidereal time and decimal time.
