New Solar Independence Exhibit and American Solar Challenge Events Open June 30

The U.S. Department of Energy will bring their Solar Independence exhibit to the Museum of Science and Industry beginning Saturday, June 30 through Sunday, July 15, 2001. This hands-on exhibit will feature learning opportunities for Museum guests to discover the value of renewable energy. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit centerpiece is a magnificent 64'x40' American flag created using solar panels, that powers several of the exhibit displays. Also included in the exhibit, a solar demonstration house, a solar powered fountain, a sundial, a bubble machine, and an interactive fountain. Representatives from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy also will be in attendance to answer guests’ questions and provide further insight.

The American flag display is made of solar panels that produce enough electriciy to power 1-2 average suburban homes.

Watch the race begin on Sunday, July 15 as teams from around the world travel the 2300 miles to Southern California.
The American Solar Challenge begins at the Museum of Science and Industry on July 15 and travels Route 66 to finish in Claremont, California.
