While boating along canals can be calm and relaxing, not to mention important for commerce, canals become clogged and murky without proper maintenance. To solve this problem, Leonardo designed this machine to clean the bottoms of canals. He mounted a revolving wheel equipped with four buckets between two boats. The buckets collected the mud and dropped it on a raft that floated between the boats. While the wheel holding the buckets turned, a rope tied to shore wound around its shaft, pulling the boat forward.
