Centuries before science fiction movies, Leonardo envisioned a machine that would look and act just like a human being. His design for a robot, dressed as a knight in medieval armor, could sit up, wave its arms, move its head, and open and close its jaw. Imagine the surprise this phantom knight elicited from unsuspecting passersby!

Leonardo studied the human body extensively during his research for paintings and inventions. His robot uses pulleys as joints and as muscles and tendons, mimicking systems found in the human body.
