Traditions:
In Luxembourg, holiday gifts are given not on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but rather on Saint Nicholas' Day on December 6. Children put their shoes outside their bedroom doors before going to bed on the 5th in the hopes that they will awaken to find that St. Nicholas has filled them with toys and sweets. Saint Nicholas, sometimes called Kleeschen, arrives in his bishop's robes to reward children for their good behavior. He is usually rewarded for his kindness at each home by the children, who prepare sweets as refreshment for him before he continues his journey.

Later in December, farmers blow long horns at sunset to announce the coming of Christmas. The night of the 24th, most families attend Midnight Mass before eating their meal. They return to lay the table with traditional foods like black pudding, mashed potatoes, applesauce, spiced wine and Mettwurscht (spiced sausage). The next few days are usually spend visiting with family and friends, attending children's nativity plays, and relaxing before the end of the Christmas season.
