Traditions:
Christmas traditions in India are very different depending on where in the country you happen to be. Throughout the country, pine trees are rare, if not nonexistent, so most Christian families choose to decorate banana or mango trees instead. Many also follow the British tradition of giving charity to the poor. In India, these handouts are known as baksheesh.

In Bombay, Christian families generally display a crèche, or nativity scene, in their windows. Visitors to Bombay (now called Mumbai) at Christmas can also see large star-shaped paper lanterns hung between the houses.

In southern India, Christians place small clay oil-burning lamps on their rooftops and windowsills to proclaim the coming of the season, while many communities in the northwest spend their evenings singing Christmas carols during Christmas week.

Lit candles and red flowers (usually poinsettias) decorate most Indian churches when families gather for mass of worship on Christmas Eve. Christmas dinner usually consists of turkey or chicken, curried rice and vegetables, and homemade sweets called mithai. As is true in the United States, Christmas in India is a time to spend with family and friends.
