TEACHER / STUDENT / PARENT WORKSHOPS
These workshops are designed to aid teachers in planning classroom activities and to help students understand the tremendous impact that African Americans have had on the fields of engineering. These discussions involve students and families in the historic and modern-day roles of African-American engineers. Staying Focused on Your Education, What is an Engineer?, and My Journey as a Chemical Engineer
Dewan Simon, chemical engineer
A graduate from the University of Notre Dame, Dewan Simon is an independent consultant in the area of process improvement. This workshop advocates the importance of continued education and encourages youngsters to view learning as a lifelong journey. Simon has spoken at more than 100 events on various topics empowering, motivating and preparing the next generation of leaders to succeed.

Take Note Becoming Business and Technology Minded
Gail Tate, program coordinator for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigns Technology, Research, and Commercialization Center (TRECC)
Tate, an engineer with a background in mathematics, computer science and product development, will present highlights of her telecommunications career and her current job within academia. The workshop introduces techniques and exercises to help students gain additional skills in note-taking, active listening, teamwork and networking. An introduction of collaborative technology (technology that allow us to work together over distance on a common task) research and resources will also be given.

Visioneering
Kevin G. Smith, executive director of the Office of Multicultural Student Services, Illinois Institute of Technology
Smith is a computer scientist specializing in information technology. His program, Visioneering, is a signature National Engineers Week event that brings together students, teachers, parents, working engineers, innovators and noted national figures from a variety of industries and businesses to celebrate the ways that engineering makes a difference in the world around us, and gives the audience the opportunity to play engineer for the day.
