PIONEER ZEPHYR'S FINAL JOURNEY

Wed., October 15, 1997 The train, re-shrink-wrapped, will wind its way through the streets of Chicago to the Museum of Science and Industry.

Thur., October 16, 1997 (weather permitting) The complete lowering of the 3 car train is expected to occur. A 250-ton crane will lift the Zephyr's engine car with a mechanical arm extending

10 a.m.- 3 p.m. up to 140 feet in length, then lower it 40 feet below ground onto train tracks already installed on the lowest level of the Museum of Science and Industry's underground parking garage, currently under construction. Fully loaded with the engine car, the crane will weigh 1,030,080 pounds. To spread the load, the crane will sit on a 30-foot-square mat of timbers up to 16 inches thick. A 225,000-pound counter weight will sit on the back of the crane to provide balance.

Sun., February 15, 1998 Anticipated opening date for the Museum's new 1,500-space parking garage and the All Aboard The Silver Streak exhibit featuring the fully- restored Pioneer Zephyr train.

The Museum of Science and Industry is located at 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive and is open every day of the year except Christmas. Museum admission is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens (65+), and $2.50 for children aged 3-11. Children under 3 are admitted free. Groups of 20 or more receive special discounts by calling (773) 684-1414, Ext. 2290. Museum hours are 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. weekends and holidays; From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Museum is open 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily.
