Gifts of Appreciated Mutual Fund Units/Shares
By making a gift of appreciated mutual fund units/shares to the Museum of Science and Industry, you will be helping the Museum, while avoiding capital gains tax on your gift. Just remember to first re-register the mutual fund units/shares; then, the Museum will cash in the mutual fund units/shares for the full appreciate value. To make a gift of mutual fund units/shares please follow the following process:
First, re-register the mutual fund units/shares as follows:
The Northern Trust Company as Custodian
For the Museum of Science and Industry
Second, please have the mutual fund company contact Maggie Morrison, Director of Individual Giving, at (773) 947-3726 with the following information:
- The name of the donor
- The name of the Mutual Fund Company
- Mutual Fund Company contact name
- Number of units being donated
- Market value of units/shares
- Cost basis per unit/share
Gifts of mutual funds will be placed in the Museum's Annual Fund unless a specific designation is requested.
