On July 23rd, America's Space Sweetheart lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 61. Sally Ride was known for being the first American female in space, but she was also the youngest American to travel in space (at 32).
While most people knew her as the astronaut, she also had a passion for education. In 2001, Dr. Ride (did I mention she had her Ph.D. in physics from Stanford?) launched Sally Ride Science, a company dedicated to inspiring a love of science in girls and boys. She wrote five children's books about space and science, and taught physics at the University of California at San Diego. A dedication to science, learning and human potential will be Dr. Ride's lasting legacy.
