Museum of Science and Industry

By issuing a driver’s license to Google’s robotic car, Nevada has inadvertently created a philosophical quandary: does a car need a license to operate itself? Great minds of the next century will no doubt ponder this question, but today's Nevada pedestrians may get to glimpse the first self-driving car legally allowed on public streets.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles meticulously scrutinized the autonomous car's performance while driving throughout Las Vegas. (If anything, says the DMV's director, it "gets honked at more often because it's being safe.") The car’s advanced electronic sensors allowed it to pass the driving test with flying colors, paving the way toward a future where distracted driving is a thing of the past.
