Overview
The Museum of Science and Industry provides programs and experiences that deepen the engagement of students and teachers in science and science-related disciplines, with a vision to inspire and motivate our children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, engineering and medicine.
The Fab Lab provides a unique opportunity for guests to engage in learning experiences that bridge art, design, science and engineering, sparking innovation in youth and adult audiences. The Fab Lab Facilitator will be responsible for delivering workshops and trainings for youth, families and adults. The Facilitator will work closely with staff from the Fab Lab serving the Museum’s school, community, and general public audiences. The Facilitator will also work with a cadre of volunteers with expertise in design, engineering and manufacturing, and will work closely with the Fab Lab team to support Fab Lab programming. The Fab Lab Facilitator will report to the Fab Lab Manager.
Responsibilities
The Fab Lab Facilitator will be responsible for delivering dynamic programming in the Fab Lab for Museum guests and other program participants. The Facilitator will be responsible for learning and developing proficiency with several consumer design software applications and machinery in the lab. The Facilitator will also support the Fab Lab Manager and Programs Coordinator in leading Lab tours, and facilitating school-group and community group programming in the Lab. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Deliver engaging and dynamic Fab Lab programming to guests and groups.
- Use inquiry-based practices in facilitating learning and engagement.
- Adapt content material to meet the needs of each audience.
- Support the research, development and prototyping of new Fab Lab programs.
- Learn new Fab Lab workshop and program content and delivery methods.
- Assist with updating Fab Lab workshop and program content and delivery methods.
- Track and record Fab Lab program attendance.
- Safely operating all Fab Lab equipment.
- Organize materials and space before and after programs.
- Assist with the daily operation and use of the Fab Lab.
- Participate as team member in working groups and project teams as assigned.
- Maintain departmental responsibilities (meetings, email, phone, etc.)
Qualifications
- A minimum of a one-year certificate from college or technical school required.
- Experience in youth or public program facilitation required.
- Demonstrated ability to work with others required.
- Demonstrated comfort and confidence speaking in front of audiences required.
- Demonstrated ability to engage diverse audiences required.
- Ability to work a flexible part-time schedule, including weekends, required.
- Experience teaching in formal or informal settings preferred.
- Experience with open source software and operating systems a plus.
- Experience in 2D design, 3D design, or technical illustration a plus.
- Individual must possess excellent verbal communication skills.
